1The research was done in Monte Santo de Minas, a relatively small municipality with approximately 20,000 inhabitants during the 1980s, half of whom lived in the rural area surrounding the town. The city’s upper strata consisted of a number of big estate owners, fazendeiros, whose wealth has relied on coffee production, along with a few owners of small industries. The middle strata were composed of small landowners who also produced coffee as well as subsistence crops and raised some cattle; and also traders, teachers, and bank employees. The lower strata were engaged in seasonal occupations but mostly did rural work (the so-called bótasfrias, a name that makes reference to the cold food rural workers eat at lunch since they take their rice and beans from home, early in the morning) or worked as domestic servants.

2I refer to the life stories of two women and one man aged, in 1989, between 70 and 80; two women and one man aged between 60 and 70; one woman aged between 50 and 60; three women and one man aged between 40 and 50; and two women and one man aged between 30 and 40. These informants link three generations: grandmothers/grandfathers, mothers/fathers, and daughters/sons. The persons interviewed were chosen on the basis of belonging to different generations of the two kinship groups on which this research is based.

3All persons’ and estates’ proper names have been modified so as to protect the research subjects’ identities.

4Coffee, whose production requires relatively large portions of land in order to be profitable, has been the town’s principal economic resource in the past and is still its main production.

5I am very much aware that these men might recall pleasurable memories of their sexual life. But, unlike the younger generation, they did not communicate them to me, as they would probably have done with a male researcher.
